I was in my mid 20’s when I learned that my mother had experienced a miscarriage. A loss that she suffered before she had me.
It was weird to digest that information. That if her unborn baby existed, I wouldn’t. My mom is one of those people who believes that everything happens for a reason and I don’t remember specifically what she said about it but I’m sure it was something along the lines of “I wouldn’t change a thing. If that didn’t happen I wouldn’t have you.” But I’m certain that it didn’t feel that way at the time.
1 in 4 women will experience a miscarriage.
My mom is 1 in 4. So is my older sister, and my best friend, and countless other women I know.
I created this piece to acknowledge every mother who has had to endure a miscarriage. The women I know, and the women I don’t.
1 in 100 women will experience a still birth.
...I can’t even touch on the weight of that grief. That impossible loss. The perpetuity of carrying that sorrow and love in your heart forever.
“I carried you every second of your life, and I will love you for every second of mine.” -Unknown
