Breast-feeding VS formula feeding
is such a controversial topic and I believe that every mother makes the choices necessary that are right for her and her baby.
With my own experience I have breast-fed, bottle-fed and had to use tubes in the NICU and the ICU. One connected through my sons stomach and an SNS tube that went in his nose using gavage feeding. We’ve done it all.
Breastfeeding didn’t come easily to me with my first. He was born 7 weeks early via a true emergency c-section due to a Feto-maternal haemorrhage and so I had to pump every 3 hours, day and night in order for my milk to come in. I was so grateful to be able to nurse but I am equally grateful to formula. I will never forget the first time I was told by a nurse and a team of doctors that I shouldn’t breast-feed my son because it was too much work for him when he had bronchiolitis in the ICU at eight months old.
I was devastated. I had worked so hard for our breastfeeding relationship. It felt like my job to nourish and comfort him with my milk. My son though, happily guzzled bottle after bottle of formula, while I pumped. The synthetic milk came out of the synthetic nipple faster. It was less work for him and he was fed and he was happy. I stopped nursing a month later and switched to formula for three months. And I felt much lighter. I rid myself of that mental load and it didn’t change a thing between my son and I. I did what was best for the both of us.
I understand why women say fed is best. I also understand why women say breast is best. I see both sides. I’ve lived both sides, and honestly we are all just doing the best we can with the hands we’ve been dealt.
I don’t see breastfeeding VS bottle feeding. I see breastfeeding AND bottle feeding. I have made so many breastfeeding paintings because that relationship is near and dear to my heart.
And now I just want to honour bottle-feeding the way it deserves to be honoured.
I hope this painting does that.
I hope that all the breastfeeding moms who judge bottle feeding moms will see a baby who is happy, and fed and bonding with his mama.
